ABOUT

Carter Design is a bicoastal boutique interior design studio founded in 2010 by the husband-and-wife team of Genevieve White Carter and Cy Carter. Known for taking an anthropological approach to the design process, the couple creates residential and commercial spaces that tease out the essence of their inhabitants through a savvy and spirited interchange of materials, art and objects, whether the house is a glass-and-steel mid-century modern in the Hollywood Hills or an 18th-century clapboard in the Hamptons.

Matching two decades of experience working for such innovative Los Angeles–based studios as Commune Design and Cliff Fong with a deep multigenerational grounding in East Coast design history, Genevieve and Cy bring a unique wit and wisdom to their interiors that’s enhanced by their wide network of artists, artisans and makers. Light-chasers and wonder-wanderers, the Carters work across the U.S. while living most days on the North Shore of Long Island—just a stone’s throw from Box Hill, the estate designed by Genevieve’s great-great grandfather, the renowned designer and bon vivant Stanford White.

When we are not running our firm, we can be found pursuing our creative passions. Genevieve is a painter and Cy is an actor in theater, television and film. We have found our creative endeavors bring a unique sense of artistry, team leadership and vision to our firm. Genevieve has also designed two wallpaper patterns available here.

SUSTAINABILITY

The natural world, more than any other single source, is where we draw inspiration for our design. As a studio we stay aware of what we are creating and their impacts. At every phase of a project we are mindful of making choices that support the health of the environment through efficiency, quality, and sustainability. We believe good design fosters conscious living so we work with like-minded companies, artisans, and trades. We are intrigued as much by age-old modalities as we are by current innovations that result in sustainability and longevity. This ethos inspires our design work, informs the internal operation of our studio, and has led to our support for the following organizations:
The Sands Foundation, Peconic Land and Trust, Ranching Heritage Foundation, Preservation Long Island, New York Landmarks Conservancy.
